Svaneti is the part of Georgia that convinces people the country is unlike anywhere else. It sits in the north west, under peaks that are among the highest in the Caucasus, and its villages are full of stone defensive towers built beside family houses, dozens of them, standing since the medieval period in a region that was effectively unconquerable for most of its history. Getting there is most of a day on the road. Almost nobody who does it regrets the drive.
The road
From the west of the country, turning inland and climbing for hours.

Where this fits in a Svaneti trip
If you want the days planned rather than just the driving solved, our five days in Svaneti lays out Mestia, the Chalaadi glacier, the ridge above the town and the jeep day to Ushguli, with the slack for weather built in.
The short version
Allow most of a day for the drive and four nights once you are there, with one written off for weather. Paved to Mestia is fine in an ordinary car in summer; Ushguli needs a four wheel drive with unpaved roads permitted, or a shared local vehicle from Mestia. Fill up before you turn inland, carry cash, download the offline maps and write the guesthouse number down. Stay in a guesthouse rather than a hotel, because the kitchen is half the reason to come.
